Obituary for Edward Cossetta

Edward Cossetta, 95, passed away peacefully, on January 28, 2020.

Eddie is survived by his loving wife Angelina (Sano); daughter Edie and son-in-law Vinny Raia; daughter Carleen and son-in-law Mark Marino. 2 beloved grandchildren: Nick and Alexa. 1 great-grandchild Joseph Gabriel.

He was preceded in death by his mother Angela Rizzola; father Carlo; sister Giuseppina; brothers Emil and Victor.

Eddie was born and raised on Mariners Harbor, where he spent his time with his neighborhood friends and playing the game he loved most, baseball. Eddie’s unhittable drop-ball resulted in personal tryouts with the Cardinals and Yankees, but instead of a potential big-league career Eddie receive a more important calling to help our country.

He was in the U.S. Army operating amphibious landing craft during World War II in the Pacific theater. Upon returning home from his service he joined the NYPD and was stationed in 6th precinct. After 5 years he transferred over to the New York City Fire Department where he was stationed at 7 Engine, in downtown Manhattan and then at Engine 165 on Staten Island.

Eddie was known in the neighborhood for his green thumb: his tomatoes, sunflowers and variety of mums. He loved puzzles, reading and he was devoted grandfather to Nick and Alexa. Every day, as they were growing up he would give them a “word of the day,” to look up. He was a fan of history and had a thirst for knowledge.

Eddie was a humble man who was dedicated to his city, his country and most of all, his family. He loved to tell stories and everyone loved to listen. He lived a complete game.
