Obituary for Joseph Calvo

Joseph A. Calvo, Sr. 82, died Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Staten Island University Hospital, New York after a courageous 7 year battle with Cortical Basal Degeneration.
He is survived by his wife Rita (Giustra), son Joseph and wife Mimi, son Thomas and wife Kim as well as four grandchildren: Matthew, Lauren, Joseph and Justin.
Joe and Rita have resided on Staten Island since 1966 in Oakwood, where their sons attended St. Charles Elementary school and Msgr. Farrell High School.
Joe worked for New York Property Insurance (NYPIUA) in Manhattan for forty years and was President from 1991 until he retired in 2011.
Joe was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was pre-deceased by his parents, Jose and Carmen. He attended Manual Training H.S. and Brooklyn College.
He was drafted into the US Army in 1959 and was stationed in Fort Knox Kentucky. He served six years and was honorably discharged in 1965.
Joe was a sports enthusiast and avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, NY Mets and the New York Football Giants. He and his sons have been season ticket holders for many years.
His love for basketball led him to become a coach when his sons were in grammar school. He coached basketball at St. Charles in Oakwood for 8 years and then a further 17 years with his sons.
Joe was admired and respected by all who came to know him. His quiet reserved manner and heart of gold were his foundation and he cared deeply for everyone in his life. He was the epitome of a family man.
He leaves a legacy to his grandchildren that will help them to enjoy the summer home he built for the family in Barnegat, New Jersey, and a 50 year Disney vacation club membership that he secured for them. It was his favorite place to vacation with the family.
He was easy to love, easy to know, and easy to be with. He leaves a void and a hole in his family’s heart forever.
Rest in peace, you giant of a man.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, any donations in the name of Joe Calvo to:
The Marian Shrine, 174 Filors Lane, Stony Point, NY 10980
