Obituary for Michael S. Arbeeny

Michael S. Arbeeny, 96
Vice President, Kirby Saunders and Family Man

Longtime former Oakwood resident Michael S. Arbeeny died peacefully in his home of natural causes in Old Bridge NJ on Weds, May 13. He was 96 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, upon graduation Mr. Arbeeny enlisted in the Army, and attended specialty training as an AAF Airplane Mechanic, specializing in Hydraulics. As a Sergeant with the 22nd MR&R Squadron, he served in Normandy, The Ardennes, Northern France and Rhineland during World War II. He was awarded the European Service Medal as well as a Good Conduct Medal prior to his honorable discharge in 1945.

Soon after returning from service, he married the love of his life, the late Evelyn Arbeeny (nee Comforte) and together they raised 6 children in Oakwood. The Arbeeny home on Leeds Street was well known and a neighborhood favorite, with many meals shared and all neighborhood kids welcome.

Professionally, Mr. Arbeeny worked for over 35 years at Kirby Saunders Inc. Mechanical Contractors in Manhattan, where he rose to the title of Vice President. His mechanical engineering projects included Madison Square Garden, The Prudential Center, Battery Park City, The United Nations, and the Sears Tower, to name a few.

With a brilliant mind that amazed all despite his advanced age, Mike was preparing his own tax return in April.

But the greatest accomplishment of his life was his family, and a home filled with love. He loved family meals and parties, and was always surrounded by his loved ones. He said many times that his greatest joy came from being his family, hearing the kids laugh, watching sports together and seeing everyone happy.

He is survived by his sons, Michael C, Ashley, and the Late Sammy and His Daughters Cynthia and Audrey Arbeeny, and Darian Touhey, their spouses, 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

There will be a private family service and funeral for his immediate family on Monday, May 18 from Colonial Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mike’s 2 favorite charities: The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

My heartfelt sympathies to the Arbeeny family. I am truly honored and blessed to have known your father. He and Mrs. Arbeeny were like second parents to me when I lived in their apartment in the Leeds St. home. Mr. Arbeeny was such a kind and gentle soul, as well as his entire family. I am really sorry for your loss and know that he is in peace united with Mrs. Arbeeny. May the Lord, and your family's love for one another, give you peace during this difficult time.
Love and prayers to you all.
